GR:Movie tie-in games: the final frontier. These are the co-op adventures of Captain Kirk and Commander Spock, based on the alternate universe created in J.J. Abrams' 2009 movie Star Trek. Its 8-hour mission: to challenge you with monotonous tasks and broken third-person shooting mechanics; to seek out new ways to test your patience with uncooperative AI; to boldly go where no game should ever go again.

Star Trek on PC is broken as f*ck

Added: 27.04.2013 4:17 | 10 views | 0 comments

The latest Star Trek release has its fair share of problems -- chief among them being that it's kind of boring -- but PC users are in for an altogether more shocking problem. The online co-op, arguably the entire point of the game, simply does not work.

GI:J.J. Abrams 2009 Star Trek reboot took the concepts from the original 1960s television series and made them more palatable for a larger audience. The original series, while full of fun characters and clever storylines, was presented with gaudy sci-fi aesthetics produced on a 60s television budget. Digital Extremes newest game, based on the J.J. Abrams film series, reminds me more of the original series than the recent films; the game has a few clever mechanics and moments, but its overall lack of polish ensures that it doesnt stand the test of time.

Space. The final frontier, or at least the one with the most expensive SFX. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise... F? G? I forget which letter we're up to now. Its sadly continuing mission? To explore strange new worlds that are actually giant broken hamster-runs, packed with strangely magnetic boulders to cower behind, terminals and locks to "hack" by way of vacuous minigames, and yellow-tinted ledges to sob at hysterically as you die of magic ragdoll sickness on the rocks a whopping 10 whole feet below.

Getting to blast away inside the new Enterprise is pretty cool, scouring for log audio clips, but in the context of this game you're just reminded of what could have been. And that's the problem. This could have been a great game. If everything had been tweaked a little more, the story had been given a bit of TLC, and the bugs ironed out, then this would have been a completely different review.

Sadly, despite the presence of some great voice acting and a strong storyline, Star Trek simply isn't the game to change anyone's mind about a genre that most would like to see die out as soon as possible.

CDW writes: So the biggest question is should you buy this game? If you are a Star Trek fan I would say yes, if you can get it cheap as there are some enjoyable parts to the game, you do get to play as either Kirk or Spock, you do get to walk around the parts of the Enterprise you are allowed to, and who doesnt like firing a phaser? If you are not a fan then I think in all honesty you should either rent it or just skip it all together as there probably isnt anything there for you. And play it with a friend as playing on your own is far too frustrating an experience.

Review: Star Trek A Disappointing Stardate -- The Analog Shtick

Added: 26.04.2013 18:17 | 14 views | 0 comments

Movie tie-ins are widely considered a bane among gamers. But with interest in a movie being enough to swindle some less-informed individuals into buying one of these apparent cash-ins, they just seem to keep coming. However occasionally something rather surprising happens. A tie-in game is given to a development team with some sort of merit to their name, and is given the triple-A treatment with up-to-date graphics and gameplay tight as can be. While many doubted, I silently thought Star Trek would end up like one of these highly successful tie-ins. While developer Digital Extremes may not be as widely renowned as some, The Darkness II was proof that they could put together a entirely enjoyable shooter that even includes a decent narrative. With Star Trek, something must have gone horrible awry.
